Overview
When I was an officer at Northwestern Mutual, responsible for leadership development and communications between our home office and our field sales force, I hired consultants to help me achieve our goals. I learned a great deal from those who were great partners but I also found that there were consultants I didn’t like to work with: consultants who would grandstand or try to work around our department so they would look like heroes, or provide a thick report and then dump and run, and others who wanted to make our company their permanent “retirement annuity.”
When I ventured out on my own in 1990, I set out to create a different kind of consulting firm: one that would share best practices, one that would create self-sustaining, practical solutions by teaching the client “how to fish” on their own, one where the client is the star, and finally a firm that is sensitive to each client’s unique culture.
